I finally finished painting the bookshelves

My parents gave me these two nice solid wood bookshelves. They fit perfectly in this little hallway off our Family Room between the Master Bedroom and the Laundry Room. You can get a better idea of where they are in the house from this photo I posted while painting the Family Room. Do you see the shelves in the back corner? Anyway, the shelves are perfect for the space, but the oak color was really dragging me down. I decided to paint them. First thing I did was Prime them. A little trick I used: when I painted around the bottom of each shelf I just slid a piece … [Read more...]

Adding vinyl to candles for a custom look

Here's a fun easy project I made recently with my Silhouette machine: I showed you this new shelf the other day: Did you notice my new candle? Looks expensive, hua! Nope. It's a WalMart candle that I added vinyl to cut from my Silhouette Machine! I found this cute letter and square around the letter at the Silhouette store. I just downloaded it and cut it out. It took me about 5 seconds. And it's darling and looks like I bought it at some overpriced upscale store. I also found a flourish at their store and added it to these two candles on my … [Read more...]

Hookin Up with HoH #38

Another rockin' party last week! Here are some of my favorites. ;) California Callahans made these huge silverware silhouettes. Check out their blog to find out how! I love this chair makeover by Organizing Made Fun! Check out how C.R.A.F.T. organized her drawer. I'm loving the organizer! Madigan Made got sick of filling her apothecary jars each season, so she painted them to look like beautiful milk glass. {So Much} Jane and Eugene spray painted their faucet a beautiful Oil Rubbed Bronze color. These handmade birdhouses on pedestals made … [Read more...]

Instilling self-esteem & DIY skills in your kids

When I was a little girl my dad taught me how to be handy. He was always tinkering with something, or fixing something else, or building an addition to our home or installing a new engine in a car. There were times when I hated standing there handing him 2x4's or nails, or getting my hands dirty inside a car engine. There were many times I wished I were inside in the air conditioning playing with my dolls, or as I grew older, talking on the phone. But as much as I complained while I was working along side him, I always felt a huge sense of pride and accomplishment once the project was … [Read more...]

The Cow and the Pig in the kitchen

Yesterday I showed you a new shelf I hung in the breakfast room. I'm sure you noticed my cow and pig heads... I snuck them into a picture back in October... ...but besides that one little nod, I've never mentioned them before, which is a crying shame because they are two of my favorite things in my house! Okay, so what's the deal with the cow and the pig, anyway? I like quirky things, and these are quirky alright. And since they represent beef and pork, I figured, "Why NOT put them in the kitchen?" LOLZ I found these heads out in Los Angeles at Goodwill. SCORE, … [Read more...]

A small update makes a big statement in the breakfast room

Every day when I'm sitting at my table, I stare at this blank wall... {Just ignore the orange around the windows. I am about to hang some moulding.} There are many things wrong with this photo (windows, curtains, Legos on the buffet, cooler on the deck, etc, etc, etc) but today I'm just focusing on the blank wall, so try to just ignore all the other faux pas and stay with me here. I've stared at this wall for 5 months now trying to figure out what to put here. I've tried a plate rack (too narrow), a big round plate (too country), and several pictures (to wide). After … [Read more...]
