Carnival-themed baby shower, a photo booth, & a cupcake stand tutorial

Back in October my sister's best friend and I hosted a Carnival-themed baby shower for my pregnant sister. It turned out so fun and creative. The shower was hosted at my house but credit for the majority of the planning and decorating goes to my sister's best friend, Stephanie. I like to keep things simple (I'm cheap and lazy) but Stephanie totally knocked this out of out the park. The only downside to hosting the party outside at 4pm was that the lighting was terrible with shadows all over the place. It wasn't noticeable in person, but the photos really enhance all the shadows. The … [Read more...]

The multi-purpose dining room

The dining room has been a thorn in my side since we moved in. I knew moving into the house that I had no real idea for the actual use of this room. I'm grateful to have the additional space, but it's been difficult to nail down an actual purpose for it. All I knew going in is that the piano has to be in this room. There is literally no other spot for it in the house. Because we downsized into a smaller home we also ended up with too much stuff and not enough space, so the dining room became the catch-all: In october I went on a decrapification spree and got rid of a ton of stuff. I was … [Read more...]

Our plans for the laundry room & a fun addition to the pantry

Hello there! We are finally feeling some warmish weather again here in Austin. It was below freezing for several days (you Northerners don't laugh! It never gets below freezing here.) but we are now enjoying temps in the low 60s (don't be jealous though, we pay for it each summer when temps get into the high 90s!). Anyway, because of the nicer weather Ben and I hit up Costco this weekend for an exciting purchase to finish off (errr, start?) a project we've been wanting to do for some time now. This project is one of those "if you give a mouse a cookie" type projects, so who knows when we … [Read more...]

Recycling when you don’t have curbside pick up

(I was one of the bloggers selected by True Value to work on the DIY Squad. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program as well as writing about my experience. I have also been compensated for the materials needed for my DIY project. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.) Our old house had curbside recycling. They would pick it up in a separate garbage can along with the garbage. It was so easy and I never thought much about it. We didn't even have to sort it! Recycling for so many years got me into the habit, … [Read more...]

2013 recap – TV segment, AP articles, favorite projects

Hi my friends! Do you remember me? I haven't blogged in several weeks (a first for me!) and I'll admit, it's a little weird to sit down after a few weeks off and write a post. I feel so rusty. I decided to just enjoy the entire season with my family and not stress over getting posts up (a first in 4 years). It was refreshing. First order of business... I am on TV today! Yup, I braved my biggest fear and filmed a short segment on the local Austin Time Warner Cable News for a segment called House Proud. The 2 minute segment is about clearing out your clutter and having a garage sale. You can … [Read more...]
