Run cables in-wall with a PVC cable drop

Today I'm sharing one of the coolest things in my kitchen. During construction of our new customized IKEA kitchen we created a small cabinet and counter that wrap around a short wall. The wall is about 24" wide and the countertop will be about 8" deep. This was a great way to use some otherwise dead space and create a perfect little counter and cabinet for all our electronics. Below is a photo of the open cabinet. We created this custom narrow cabinet and counter area to be a hub area for things like our Amazon Echo, cell phone chargers, our alarm system touch screen, etc. If we … [Read more...]

Creating a wrap-around cabinet & moving the dishwasher || IKEA kitchen renovation

Happy Hump Day! Today I'm switching gears from the Custom IKEA kitchen island over to the sink area. We had two big custom areas in our kitchen: the island and the sink area. Let's start with the "before" photos so you can get an idea of our overall plan. Here's the kitchen the day we moved in 3 years ago. The dishwasher is to the right of the sink. We want to move the dishwasher to the left of the sink so we can put in a lazy Susan to the right of the sink. Here's a better "before" picture (below) of how we were living in our kitchen before the renovation. As you can see, we had a … [Read more...]

Create custom canned goods storage from IKEA cabinets

Happy Monday! Can you believe June is almost over? Time really does fly when you are having fun. On Friday I shared with you our process of building and customizing our new IKEA kitchen island. We wanted a very custom island that looked more like a piece of furniture than an actual set of kitchen cabinets and achieved that look in unconventional ways by using toe kicks and panels. One additional change we made to our island to really customize it and take away some of that off-the-shelf feel of IKEA were custom 7" deep cabinets to store canned goods. When the doors are closed you … [Read more...]

Pull-outs & lazy susans || Custom organization in our IKEA kitchen

Hey guys and gals! We are neck deep in building our own custom IKEA kitchen! If you want to read all about our on-going IKEA series, start here. Today I'm going to talk about one of the ways we are taking our box IKEA kitchen and making changes to it so it's more custom and fits our specific needs. Instead of the basic insert options that IKEA offers, we decided to take it up a notch and install higher quality, more heavy duty inserts to accommodate our hard-working family. Here are two of the IKEA options that we scrapped for more industrial strength and aesthetically-pleasing … [Read more...]

Assembling and installing IKEA Sektion kitchen cabinets

Wednesday I shared the process of planning an IKEA kitchen and placing your order at IKEA. It is chock full of information and tips so make sure you go check it out. I'm back today to share all about assembling the Sektion cabinet boxes and getting them hung on the wall. Ikea has definitely streamlined this process with their railing system, but if you want a more custom-look to your new kitchen you will have to pay very close attention to small details. Before I dive into the cabinets, first we had to finish prepping our kitchen to receive them. After gutting the kitchen and having the … [Read more...]
