RAINBOW cake! So pretty when you cut into it.

My daughter LOVES to bake. Like, daily, she is whipping up something in the kitchen. And of course, it's never anything easy - it's always some super creative complicated adventure that usually turns out delicious. This time was no different - she and her friend created a beautiful Rainbow Cake 5-layers tall. Obviously cutting into it was really fun but the best part was that it actually tasted really good! For this super simple cake that your kid can make, she started with 2 white cake mixes (the box ones) and mixed them up together in a double batch. Then she divided the … [Read more...]

Cooking with Kinsey – Gluten-Free birthday cake w/ fondant & buttercream

Our 10 year old daughter, Kinsey, LOVES to bake. Not only does she love it, she is freaking good at it too. At 10 years old, she can bake all sorts of stuff (cake, cupcakes, cookies, brownies), start to finish, completely by herself. Last week our son, Travis, turned the big 1-3. Yes, I have a teenager. Ack! Kinsey decided for part of her gift to him she wanted to bake his birthday cake. She totally nailed this cake. I'm still shocked a 10 year old with little baking experience and pretty much zero decorating experience pulled off this cake. Travis is strictly gluten-free (and … [Read more...]

Organizing 101: Organizing School Lunches {gluten-free}

Gooooooood morning! I hope you are off to a fine start this beautiful Wednesday morning. Have you been following along so far on our Organizing 101: Back to Basics series? I hope so because it's been a lot of fun and a whole lotta great organizing tips! Today is my day to share how to organize that chaos each morning that is making the children's school lunches (and yours and the misters for that matter!). I am by no means a professional organizer or lunch maker. I am however, a mom who's been making school lunches each and every morning for more than 5 years. :) Before … [Read more...]

A plethora of marshmallow pop trifecta

How's that for a title? I kill even myself sometimes. Bada-bing! Um... er... uh... {innocent whistling}... Let's just get on with the post, shall we? Before Valentine's Day two weeks ago, K and I made a bunch of Chocolate Covered Strawberries. {tutorial here} During that chocolate making session we also made another fun treat! And let me tell you, these bad boyz are delicious. Marshmallow Pops! Yup. We took a ball of sugar, dipped it into chocolate sugar, then dipped it again into sugar sprinkles. Do you see a trend here? Sugar dipped in sugar dipped … [Read more...]

Make your own Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate Covered Strawberries are a yummy Valentine's treat, but they are pricy! I refuse to pay $5-$10 for four strawberries. Fortunately, years ago I learned how to make my own Chocolate Covered Strawberries. You will be shocked when you realize how easy and inexpensive they are to make. Never pay inflated prices again! First, you want to gear up. You will need fresh strawberries (washed), chocolate, and a cookie sheet with wax paper. I prefer Dolci Frutta which can be found on the baking isle or near the fruit section at your local grocery store. However, you … [Read more...]

Crappy Cones. Literally.

I apologize in advance if you have a sensitive stomach or are easily squeamish. But this was too gross and too awesome not to share. Last month my son T turned 10. For his birthday he wanted me to make Cupcake Cones: T decided he wanted colored cones and chocolate cake and icing. No problem. Everything went as planned and they were actually starting to look pretty cute. Until the icing. Then things went horribly wrong. Do you see what I see? Are you simultaneously laughing and throwing up in your mouth a little? Every cupcake looked like a dog … [Read more...]

Mini cookie cutouts – fun way to bake with your kids

I'm popping in to share a really quick fun baking craft I did with Kinsey a few weeks ago. Kinsey LOVES to bake. Her favorite are Chocolate Chip Cookies (I use the recipe on the back of the Nestle Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips bag). We decided it would be fun to get creative with the cookies and make little shapes from them. Have you ever tried to use cookie cutters on Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough? They do not hold their shape when you bake them and turn into a mess. So we baked a cookie bar instead! We just put the entire bowl of dough onto a cookie sheet (bar pan - I … [Read more...]
