The piano bench gets new hinges and a make-under

Hi friends! I hope you are having a fabulous summer. We've been so busy this summer, and I just realized school starts in less than 4 weeks. I'm kinda sad about it. It's so fun having my kids around all day, and also not having to follow a strict schedule. Last year we bought a piano. It has pretty much become the staple item in our house. We all play, and all of my son's drumline friends play, so it gets used daily as a minimum. I also added a new layer of fabric to the bench: Most of you liked the new fabric, but a few of you commented that it was gross that I didn't … [Read more...]

Sewing her own Tapir stuffed animal with no pattern!

My 13 year old daughter created her own pattern and sewed her very own Tapir. Yes, you read that right - a tapir. They are an animal that my family is obsessed with. I'm just SMH right now at how silly this entire conversation sounds. :) So, she made a stuffed animal tapir for a school project. She did a project on tapirs at school, and her teacher offered bonus points if she created a tapir and brought it to school. So OF COURSE she wanted to sew one. Here's the finished tapir: For a 13 year old with little sewing knowledge and no pattern to go off of, I'd say this is a win! … [Read more...]

How to create cheap sophisticated window treatments

I've been trying to spruce up my office lately to make it feel more cozy. I don't have a ton of extra cash for all new furniture, so I've made do with what I have. While I don't have a ton of extra cash, I do have a little to put towards some very inexpensive window treatments. Did you know you can make your own curtain rods for only a few bucks? If you add in the brackets too you are still less than $8 for the entire getup! My office is basically a bedroom on our main floor (the other bedrooms are all upstairs). This room has one large window and one small window. Yes, these … [Read more...]

RAINBOW tutus and knee highs @ Bolder Boulder 10k

Every year on Memorial Day, the city of Boulder, Colorado hosts a huge 10k called the Bolder Boulder. It is the biggest race of the year, and one of the biggest 10k's in the country! The race is more like a huge party with local live bands playing every half-mile. There are also tons of activities set up throughout the race including trampolines, swimming pools, slip-n-slides, cotton candy makers, free beer (for adults!), free chip stations, free bacon stations, tons of water stations, free sunscreen stations, etc. It's more like a walking/running 10k party and less of an actual … [Read more...]

creating PRIMAL FURS for Indoor Percussion

Last week I introduced y'all to Indoor Drumlines, or Indoor Percussion Ensembles. My son is in high school and had the cool opportunity to be a part of his high school's Indoor Drumline. They preformed a cool show called Primal, which included awesome costumes created on the cheap by the parents of the group. Here's the final costume: In this post I showed you guys how I created the loin cloth (skirt) and belt for the costume. Today I'm here to wrap up this Indoor Drumline PRIMAL series with a play-by-play on all the furs the kids wore. The pit kids (the ones in the front who … [Read more...]

Creating the LOIN CLOTH SKIRTS & BELTS for Indoor Drumline show

Last week I introduced you to my son's Indoor Drumline group, where they put on a show this year called Primal. The teens put in countless hours of hard work into pulling off a 1st in State show and we parents coudln't be any prouder of them. The show would definitely not come together without the help of all the parent volunteers as well. My "job" this season was "Costume Coordinator". I made sure each entire costume arrived at each show during the season and made sure each kid had what they needed before they preformed. I also was heavily involved in creating the costumes, especially certain … [Read more...]

Indoor Percussion Ensemble – PRIMAL theme

As a high school freshman this year, our son had the very cool opportunity to participate in an Indoor Percussion Ensemble, or an Indoor Drumline, which consists of the marching percussion (battery) and front ensemble (pit) sections of a marching band. His Indoor Drumline preformed a show called Primal. They placed 1st in State! Indoor percussion marries elements of music performance, marching, and theatre. Most indoor percussion groups are affiliated with a high school although there are also many independent groups as well. Indoor percussion groups will generally practice and perform … [Read more...]
