Happy Valentine’s Day!! Boy do I have a treat for you today.
My husband Ben has agreed to guest post today in honor of our 13th Valentine’s Day together.
I hope you get a kick out of this very creative project he came up with.
Take it away, Ben!
With the economy in the toilet, unemployment rates up, and the price of cards and chocolate climbing — why not do a cheap, customizable DIY valentine this year?
Sweethearts candies are a classic way to send love messages to that someone special in your life.
Today I’m going to share with you a step-by-step tutorial on how to make your own customized sweethearts so that you can make sure that extraordinary person knows how you really feel about them. To begin, you only need 3 materials:
- Box of Sweethearts candies (25 ¢)
- Fine Point Felt Tip Pen
- A tongue
Step 1: Gather your materials
Box of Sweethearts Candies
Fine Point Felt Tip Pen – you probably have one lying around the house. If not, you can get one of these from pretty much any store. The fine point Sharpie pen works awesome. A ball point pen won’t do the trick – make sure you have one like this.
Step 2: Prepare the Sweethearts
Grab a sweetheart that you would like to customize.
Lick the side of it with the message on it using your tongue until the message is gone. The message is just printed on it with some sort of edible ink and generally comes off fairly easily.
Step 3: Customizing the Sweethearts
Flip the Sweethearts candy over. We will be using the back side of the candy (the one you didn’t lick) because it is flatter than the side that had the original message on it.
“Why lick off the message then?” … you may be wondering. We don’t want that special someone in your life to be confused about which message you are sending them. Mixed signals are never a good thing. We’ll make sure there is just one message on the Sweethearts candy so that it can received with the thought that was intended.
Now, take your felt tip fine point pen and write a customized message to your loved one:
Think of a heartfelt message that tells them how you really feel. For example:
Or create an interactive message using both sides:
Search your feelings…
For that special moment after you’re making up from a fight:
Quote your favorite TV shows:
Show some pride by displaying your favorite rock band:
Share them all with your friends online via your favorite social media:
You can even get creative by customizing the original messages to be your own:
Make one for your kids to show off their favorite TV show:
Play an ad-hoc game of Tic Tac Toe:
Use an old sticky note leftover from a business trip to make a Valentine’s Day Card. Using a sweethearts candy, draw around it a portrait of the special person in your life (they’ll really dig this one).
I can’t wait for Allison to see the picture that I drew of her. Man I’m a good artist. Why did I ever stop?
Use the green ones to make a Valentine’s Day Card displaying the Irish in you:
And last but not least, show support for your favorite blog (too bad it wasn’t orange):
Step 4: Delivery
Shove them all back into the sweethearts box. Make it look like the box has not been opened before so they’ll never know:
You can even leave a little customized message on the box for them before they open:
There are so many ways you can do cheap DIY Valentine’s Day presents. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to show them that you love them. A 25 ¢ box of Sweethearts, a pen, a tongue, and a little creativity will do wonders for your relationship!
Awwww, is he sweet or what? I’m so lucky to have such a romantic guy!
I think every gal deserves such a Sweetheart of a guy.
Why on earth would I want flowers and a nice dinner on the town when I can have such a unique thoughtful gift instead?
If you love Ben as much as I do, you will certainly enjoy his blog too! Don’t take my word for it though. Go check him out for yourself. ‘Cause he’s hot.
Ben likes health and exercise, so he mainly blogs about that stuff, which is ironic considering he’s married to such a lazy person who enjoys food way too much. Maybe one day his healthy active lifestyle will rub off on me. We can only hope.
