Make your own drawer dividers/organizers

I can't believe I forgot to show you this awesome project in our last house. I was going through old photos and came across these and had such a doh! moment when I realized I never shared this. So, for those trying to keep up with every place we've ever lived, this was our 2nd house in Austin (our country house), before we moved here to Colorado. And to confuse you even more, this was post-renovation on our kitchen in that house. And just to make things even more interesting, Ben's company just went through a merger and his company was the one getting bought out, so now things are … [Read more...]

Because you know I’m all about that base, ’bout that base

The new baseboards are in and painted. And I am all about that base! Because we did such a large-scale renovation, the builder sent his team over to do all the trim work for us - baseboards, moulding, shelving, and doors. It was so nice to feel so pampered! Usually I will hang all the base and it takes me forever. I did however, have to paint it all. And trust me, that was not fun in the least. Each piece of trim had to be caulked, nail holes had to be filled, they needed a coat of primer, and then to finish it off, at least two coats of paint (some areas needed three coats). … [Read more...]

Widening a single door to double doors in the hall closet

In addition to installing a new kitchen, we also widened two doorways; the game room and the hallway closet. I realized when going through photos that I never shared a before and after of the closet in the hall. Here is the hall before we widened the doorway. The closet is the first door on the left. And here it is open. The closet is very wide, but with only a single door, it made it much harder to utilize the space to the left and right. Our renovation consisted of us doing lots of demo work (to save money) and then our builder's team putting it all back together. Ben … [Read more...]

Curtain tiebacks as mudroom hooks

I've been putting off doing any permanent storage in our mudroom/laundry room. I've been holding off; wanting to wait until I can install the mudroom of my dreams, complete with lots of storage, a bench to sit on, and hooks for backpacks and coats. Well, we've been here a year and a half, and this is just not a practical goal. Backpacks and coats have been strewn all over the floor, and the kids have started avoiding the mudroom completely and dumping all their bags, books, coats, and shoes in my dining room every day. Enough is enough! I created a temporary (but probably less … [Read more...]

The updated columns in the kitchen

Okay, so first off, holy moly you guys are seriously the best. I am blown away by all the comments I received on my post from yesterday. I am not speechless often, but right now, I am speechless. Thank you for just being you. I wasn't expecting anything when I typed up that post last night. I just felt like I owed you guys an explanation. Comments across blogs are at an all time low, so I guess I just didn't even think that anyone would comment. I woke up this morning to so much support in my comments section and on facebook. I was taken aback by all the love. I'll admit, I did get choked up a … [Read more...]

The plans for the new kitchen layout

As promised, I am here to show you the new kitchen layout. I talked about our plans in my first "We're renovating the kitchen!" post last week, but as per the usual, once I published the post with all my plans, I freaked out and changed all the plans. I'm very consistent in my inconsistency. :) I'm going to show you several before photos first to give you a good feel for the space before I show you all the changes we are making. I used painters tape to measure off the new layout and live with it for a week or so to make sure I LOVED it before gutting my entire kitchen and building the new … [Read more...]

The multi-purpose dining room

The dining room has been a thorn in my side since we moved in. I knew moving into the house that I had no real idea for the actual use of this room. I'm grateful to have the additional space, but it's been difficult to nail down an actual purpose for it. All I knew going in is that the piano has to be in this room. There is literally no other spot for it in the house. Because we downsized into a smaller home we also ended up with too much stuff and not enough space, so the dining room became the catch-all: In october I went on a decrapification spree and got rid of a ton of stuff. I was … [Read more...]
