Stunning fireplace makeover with paint!

I finally did it. I finally took the plunge and painted the fireplace! I've been putting it off for a year and a half because, well, it's just so permanent. What if I hated it? Once you paint brick, it is really hard to un-paint it. It's a scary plunge! But I finally just dove in head first and did it. I mean, how can I hate the brick any more than I already do? Peach brick is really not my thing, and I just couldn't stare at that huge peach wall for one more day. Check out the before and after pics, and get all the deets about painting brick... Here's where we started: We have a … [Read more...]

Because you know I’m all about that base, ’bout that base

The new baseboards are in and painted. And I am all about that base! Because we did such a large-scale renovation, the builder sent his team over to do all the trim work for us - baseboards, moulding, shelving, and doors. It was so nice to feel so pampered! Usually I will hang all the base and it takes me forever. I did however, have to paint it all. And trust me, that was not fun in the least. Each piece of trim had to be caulked, nail holes had to be filled, they needed a coat of primer, and then to finish it off, at least two coats of paint (some areas needed three coats). … [Read more...]

Widening a single door to double doors in the hall closet

In addition to installing a new kitchen, we also widened two doorways; the game room and the hallway closet. I realized when going through photos that I never shared a before and after of the closet in the hall. Here is the hall before we widened the doorway. The closet is the first door on the left. And here it is open. The closet is very wide, but with only a single door, it made it much harder to utilize the space to the left and right. Our renovation consisted of us doing lots of demo work (to save money) and then our builder's team putting it all back together. Ben … [Read more...]

Putting everything back together again

This kitchen renovation is kicking our rear. So much prepping in order to get ready for cabinets. Let's see, where was I when I last left off? Oh, right... thinset, framing, and plumbing. As soon as the thinset was removed from the floor, John the Builder (man I get a kick out of calling him that because it sounds like Bob the Builder) had the drywall installers over here. In fact, they were a day early! I always hear horror stories about renovations taking 10x longer than expected, and workers being delayed by days or weeks. Lots of the waiting game. We haven't experienced any of that at … [Read more...]

Ben’s office 4-month progress report

Ben's office is usually such a wreck that it's hard for me to share it with you guys. However, we recently painted the room and it somehow got clean/organized enough that I could snap a few pictures. Come on in and check it out so far... The day we closed on the house a little over 4 months ago, the room looked like this: Neon green walls, sheer neon green curtains, cream baseboards, worn carpet... The first thing I did was rip out the carpet and spray all the baseboards with a paint sprayer. You can read about that here. When the carpet guys were putting in all new … [Read more...]

I see a white door and I want it painted black.

Guess what I've been up to lately. If you said, "painting?" then you are absolutely right. Yup, another painting post. I told y'all I was going to paint this house top to bottom before I did anything else to it. It needs new everything and paint is the first step. I'm already pretty tired of painting trim and walls and ceilings (oh my!), so I might break my promise and skip to something a little more fun. I'm not sure how much more of this monotonous work I can take. I need some windows moulded or a holiday craft or something. But for today? It's all about paint. So, ya, I've been … [Read more...]
