Shoes! Shoes! Shoes! Ikea shelving hack

With four people in our house, we have LOTS of shoes.

We don’t wear shoes on the carpet, so I make everyone kick them off in the garage on the way inside.

DSCN4833

This is only the pile that actually made it into the mud/laundry room. We’ve got a ridiculous amount of flip-flops actually IN the garage.

DSCN4830

See! There are more of the flip-flops!

This is our garage on the way into the mud/laundry room. I wanted something around this area to hold all these massive amounts of shoes!

Also, I am quirky and don’t like to leave close-toe’d shoes on the floor in fear that spiders or roaches will crawl inside and bite our toes!

We headed over to IKEA and found shelves for $2 each and brackets for $1 a pair.

DSCN4852

I tasked my husband to install the shelves. Here is the huge mess mid-install.

DSCN5360

I found an extra basket in my leftover junk stash and threw it at the bottom to hold all the extra “flat” shoes like flip-flops.

DSCN5362

We are slowly getting organized around here. I think I’m going to have hubbs install a few more levels of shelves above these ones if I ever actually get myself back to IKEA.

It doesn’t seem like much, but seriously, these shelves have saved myself from several twisted ankles from tripping over all the

SHOES!

Great idea… but I can’t believe you didn’t spray paint the brackets! Just kidding. I actually had a little bit more space and bought (from Ikea) one of the bookshelves with square holes.

LOL, maybe some ORB or Heirloom White? My daughter is forever teasing me about always painting something.
Anyhoozle, we don’t wear shoes around the house either, but we take ours off inside. While we might have between 1-6 pairs at any given time, it’s always just one pair per person…not great but they don’t stay there. When my adult kids leave so do their shoes and in the evening we just put ours away.

Well, I had a choice between black, red, or white, and I was naturally going to pick black but I felt like I should branch out and go BOLD with red. Honestly, I really don’t like the red now that they are on the wall. Oops. So much for branching out.

I have way too many spiders in my garage to keep my shoes out there…I’m with you…I check my shoes before I put them on if they’ve been in a closet too long. 🙂

My people all kick off their shoes in front of the closet where they go. Seriously? How hard is it to open the door and put the shoes in the basket?

Plus, I think the shoes are gettin’ busy in there, because what starts out as one or two pairs, quickly multiples into a whole lot more.

At any rate, I love the shelves.

I would love for us to all keep our shoes in our closets, but I’m phobic about germy shoes on the carpet. I make everyone take their shoes off before they come in my house. I don’t want yucky outside germs on my floor. LOL.

My mom did something similar with our shoes when we were little. We each got one shelf with our name on it, and whatever didn’t fit on that shelf had to be kept in our rooms!

I just wish MY KIDS would actually put the shoes ON the shelves. I still trip over them, and then I pick them up and put them away!!!

Ya, I know, but the shelves really do provide a false peace of mind. LOL. I still check them before I wear them though!

Thanks! Poor child has wide feet, so there are only a select few she can actually buy and wear! She was so upset that the Sketchers Twinkle Toes just don’t fit her at.all. 🙁

With 6 of us in this house, we have the same problem. I did something similar. I found an old bookcase and put it by the door. So much better 🙂
