The thrifted shelf

Hi guys! {Squeal} I am so excited to finally be back here with you again.

As I said in my last post, we have had a rough go around here with lots of illness. In the end, all 4 of us have now been sicker than a dawg, but fortunately the kids are well now, and Ben and I are on the upswing.

I went to the doctor today because I have horrible congestion in my chest, and she said I have bronchitis. She said I have it so bad that it sounds like tuberculous. Yikes. I should be just fine now though because she sent me home with some meds that should kick this bronchitis crap to the curb. We’ll show him who’s boss around here. 😉

In addition to the medical update, I actually do have a home related update to show you. Two years ago I bought this shelf on Craigslist. It’s kinda hard to see in this picture. Sorz.

Because I am oblivious and I spend half my life walking around with my head in a cloud, I didn’t even realize it was missing the top shelf until I got home. Doh.

You can’t really return stuff you bought on Craigslist, so I improvised. I found a thin piece of wood in my scrap pile and cut it to fit on the top of the shelf. Then I spray painted the wood piece with some Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint. It is just sitting on top. I didn’t even screw it down or anything. Fits like a glove.

Once the shelf was fixed I stuck it in my kids’ bathroom. I liked it okay in there, but I was never sold on it. Plus, I actually got rid of all that duckie stuff about a year and a half ago, so the shelf was just sitting there empty. My kids are a little too big for duck accessories now.

It seriously sat either in this bathroom empty or in our gameroom empty for more than a year and a half. I kept trying to think of a good place for it, but it is just a weird awkward shelf that doesn’t really fit anywhere. Finally one day I decided to just get rid of it.

I carried it downstairs and stuck it in my piano room in preparation for sending it off to goodwill.

Except once I saw it in the piano room, I knew I had finally found a home for it. Funny how that works, hua?

Seriously. I was about to give this shelf away. It sat upstairs unused for more than a year. And the solution had been right in front of my eyes the entire time. Its like it was meant to be. Could there be a more perfect home for this cheap Craigslist find? I think not.

I usually find styled shelves a complete waste of space, but I really like having all these large-ish accessories on display in the piano room. It adds a little more visual interest in there.

First of all, so glad you are feeling better. I had a bad bout of bronchitis a few years ago – it was so bad, I may have even sprained a rib from all the coughing. 🙁 So, I feel for you.
Secondly, isn’t nice when you finally find a great use for an item you’ve been holding onto for a loooooong time? It makes it totally worth it to have saved it for all that time. Total score – it looks really nice in that spot! 🙂

I love the new home for the shelf although I really liked it in the bathroom too. Maybe in real life it was awkward, but in the pictures it looks great!! Adorable with all the duckies!

Wishing you a healthy New Year in 2013!

yes, it does look great there. Funny how that worked out. I have a toy bench that I sold through craigslist. But the first buyer was a no show so it sat in my dining room for a few days till someone else came to buy it. In the meantime I decided I liked the toy bench there and went out to buy another one that looked nicer. Sometimes you don’t know what you have till you move it.

Glad you are feeling better. I also had bronchitis, it took over a month for all of the coughing to go away. Get as much rest as you can. The shelf and the room look great! Have a wonderful new year. Always love reading your blog!

Love the way it looks in your piano room! I find that if I am patient enough things will fall in to place like they were meant to.

I was also wondering if you were still doing Hookin It Up on Thursdays?

Glad you’re feeling better! My co-worker broke a rib by coughing, so it’s important to get meds when really necessary! Such a great spot for that shelf! And just to let you know, you’re never too old for duckies!!!!

well i am glad to see you are getting back to your normal sself. It was so obvious when your dialogue took such a different tone that you were needing some medical intervention.
Do get plenty of rest in this recuperative time.

So sorry to hear everyone has been sick. I swear I feel like me, the hubs and our son all passed around the same bug for the month of december. We STILL all have a lingering cough. YUK! Hopefully your meds get your back on track here soon.
As for the shelf..what a fun little story and I couldn’t agree more that it found a perfect home in your piano room.

So glad to hear that you and the family are on the mend. Being sick definitely sucks big time but especially when it happens during the holidays.

The shelf looks great in the piano room! Isn’t it funny how sometimes we have to move things around a few times before they find their perfect home?

You found the perfect spot! It looks stunning in this room with the accessories/decor you’ve displayed on it. I also have a hard time using a shelf just for decoration, but this really looks fabulous and it’s just enough…not too much!

Allison, where did you get the white slip covers in the piano room? I think that shape would work for my two living room chairs.
